MEXT, JASSO and university-specific awards — the deadlines, the Japanese level required and how to prepare.

MEXT is the best-known route and covers tuition plus a monthly stipend. Embassy recommendation applications open around April with written tests in June, so preparation should start the previous year.

JASSO honours scholarships are awarded after arrival and are far easier to obtain if your Japanese is strong enough to enrol in a Japanese-taught programme rather than an English one.

For MEXT written exams, academic Japanese matters more than conversation. Our N1 course reading modules use the same register you will meet on the paper.
