How to actually learn hiragana in two weeks

14 Jul 2026 · 5 min read

A day-by-day plan that gets you reading kana without flashcard burnout — plus the three mistakes beginners repeat.

Split the 46 base characters into five-a-day groups by row. Write each one ten times while saying it out loud — muscle memory and sound memory reinforce each other far better than silent recognition drills.

From day three, start reading real words rather than isolated characters. Reading すし and ねこ cements shapes in context and stops you from mixing up ぬ and め.

The three classic mistakes: learning romaji crutches, skipping stroke order, and ignoring dakuten until later. Fix all three in week one and katakana takes half the time.
